HAND-CUT COLLAGE WITH ACRYLIC PAINT ACCENTS

[ Description ]
Retro Realities is a visually striking series of hand-cut collages exploring identity, individuality, and cultural transformation through the lens of the “Swinging Sixties.” The 1960s marked a pivotal shift in American history and pop culture, bridging the traditionalism of the 1950s with the bold, rebellious spirit of the generations that followed. Each 24” x 36” piece incorporates layers of period inspired imagery and colors, creating sculptural depth while keeping the surface smooth. Every paper cut, outline, and painted accent is intentionally placed to capture the tactile energy of the 1960s while maintaining a contemporary feel.
The series examines three defining aspects of the decade; the Mod Era, reflecting youthful sophistication in fashion, music, and design; the Psychedelic Era, celebrating experimentation, self-expression, and the political and social era, including protests, the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights Movement. Rather than simply recreating the 1960s, the work reinterprets it. It merges handmade craft with mass produced culture, echoing the spirit of the age. The series invites viewers to reflect on a time when color, sound, and rebellion expressed identity, highlighting ideals of freedom, creativity, and self-expression that continue to resonate today.
